When @kitaabicabins announced the Book of the Month for May, I saw it as the perfect excuse to finally pick up a title from my TBR stack. I also wanted to journal the experience in real time — and this short read felt just right for that, without feeling overwhelming.
Here’s how the reading journey unfolded:
Dates Read:
Start – 09/05/2025
End – 11/05/2025

Chapter 1
Just 18 pages in, and a sense of mystery is already brewing. How does this enigmatic gentleman know all eight Americans at the hotel? And what kind of magic did he use to help Mark? The atmosphere is serene, but with a surreal undercurrent that draws me in.
‘Pain’s like a sneaky reptile,’ said the stranger. ‘It appears on its own, inhabits your body for as long as it chooses, sometimes forever, and, if you’re lucky, it sneaks away without saying goodbye.’
Chapter 1 ends on a cliffhanger — and I’m already energized to continue. Hopefully I’ll finish it by Sunday.
Chapter 2
Thirty-five pages in and the sense of uncertainty only deepens. The gentleman keeps peeling back layers of the Americans’ lives — even secrets they haven’t admitted to themselves.
He predicts a market crash too?
His insights feel philosophical, like life lessons disguised as revelations. It’s starting to feel like these characters have been brought together by fate to face — or correct — mistakes from a previous life.
‘We may no longer be the person we once were, but what if this person did not necessarily die but continued his life in the shadowland of our own, so that you could say that our life is filled with shadow-selves who continue to tag along and to beckon us in all directions even as we live our own lives – all these selves clamouring to have their say, their time, their life, if only we listened and gave in to them!
Who is this man?
The mystery thickens. The man reveals truths the others never confessed — maybe even truths they’ve buried. There’s gravity in everything he says, like each word holds more than its literal meaning.
This hotel in Italy is starting to feel like a spiritual crossroads.
The mystery deepens. This man unveils truths the characters never confessed—maybe even ones they’ve forgotten. The way he speaks carries weight, as if everything has a deeper meaning. Still, his identity remains hidden. It’s beginning to feel like this moment in Italy is a crossroads for each of them.
Chapter 3&4
These chapters shift the focus onto the connection between Margot and the Mystery Man. Their interactions are gentle, filled with unsaid familiarity—like memories buried just beneath the surface. The overt philosophical musings take a backseat, and emotion steps forward—longing, memory, maybe even regret. Less about ideas now, more about feeling. And still, the mystery lingers.
Chapter 5
This chapter felt like a dip in the flow. The pacing slowed, and the intrigue started to wane. The earlier spark of curiosity dulled a bit here. I’m still hoping it’ll pick back up—but for now, my enthusiasm dipped.
Final Thoughts
I finished the book, but the ending didn’t deliver what I hoped for. The mystery man’s powers—his ability to know everything, even the future—felt too unexplained. While I understand he’s meant to be a gifted healer, the lack of closure was unsatisfying.
That said, it’s an atmospheric book. The setting—the Amalfi Coast—was painted beautifully. I’d definitely love to visit someday. The first three chapters truly pulled me in, but the story didn’t maintain that momentum throughout.
Verdict
An okay read. Start strong, ends flat. Worth it for the mood, but not for the plot.
