Kindle — A Letter to You

My Kindle

Dear Kindle,

How do I thank you?

I am at a loss for words—but I’m going to try, because you deserve it.

It’s been 14 years of our journey together. Don’t you think that calls for a little celebration?

When I first brought you home, I hardly knew what to expect. I was just an excited girl, gifting you to myself on my birthday. But after those initial “getting to know you” days, I knew—you were going to be a good companion.

When I picked up The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas—a mammoth of a book, almost 1000 pages—you made it feel light. A big book, at an inexpensive price, carried so effortlessly.

When my eyes struggled with tiny fonts, you quietly offered a solution—adjust the size, make it as comfortable as I want.

On silent nights, when I wanted to read without waking my parents, I held you close under warm blankets—traveling into worlds without turning on a single light.

While traveling, I used to carry just one book. But with you, I could carry many—choosing based on my mood. You opened up that possibility, and it amazed me.

And then, your little surprises…

The built-in dictionary—just a gentle press, and a whole new world of meanings, synonyms, even links to explore more.

And Word Wise—those small meanings appearing above difficult words. How thoughtful is that?

Now you even support regional languages like Tamil and Hindi… but not Kannada. Why so? Your creators should really consider this.

For someone like me, living away from home, ordering physical copies of Indian literature can be expensive. But you—you made it easy. For that, I’m forever grateful.

But you know what? I do have a few complaints.

Don’t be angry.

You are slow sometimes. Flipping back to previous pages isn’t always easy.

And you don’t have the warmth of a physical book—the smell, the texture, the feeling.

And worst of all… you’ve made me tap on physical books too. How crazy is that?

Still, I choose to overlook these little things. Because what you offer is far greater.

Buying a book with one tap and starting instantly—that is a kind of quiet luxury.

Thank you for being a gentle companion for 14 years.

There were times I neglected you—months, even a year, when you lay untouched. You were almost forgotten. But somehow, you were always there… waiting.

And I came back.

Thank you—for staying.

Yours,

A grateful reader

Now tell me—what’s your reading preference? E-reader or physical books?

  1. Such a tender and intimate piece. The way you framed Kindle as a letter feels deeply personal, like reading and writing become a quiet conversation with oneself, carried across time and screens.
