Gangsta Granny by David Walliams

No no!! I didn’t skip the blog for  the letter F 😄 I’m just taking a little more time with it. Meanwhile, here’s a short review for you…

This is my second book by David Walliams, the first being Super Sleuth. On the surface, this feels like a light, funny children’s story—but it quietly delivers a surprising amount of emotional depth.

The story follows an 11-year-old boy, Ben, who is forced to spend his weekends with his granny while his parents enjoy their ballroom dancing shows. Ben doesn’t like staying with her—he finds her boring, and she insists on feeding him cabbage in every possible form: cabbage pie, cabbage soup… even cabbage dessert.

But one day, everything changes.

Ben discovers precious diamonds and sapphires hidden in his granny’s biscuit tin. His curiosity is instantly sparked—who is my granny, really? When he confronts her, she reveals a shocking truth: she is The Black Cat, a world-famous jewel thief. Her only unaccomplished mission? Stealing the Crown Jewels.

Suddenly, Ben is thrilled to have a “gangsta” granny and decides to help her complete this final mission. What happens next—you’ll have to read and find out 😉 I bet you can’t guess the twist in the plot.

As the story unfolds, you begin to notice the deeper layer beneath the humor. It gently reminds us how often we misjudge people—especially the elderly—and how love doesn’t always look the way we expect it to.

David Walliams’ signature style shines through—a perfect mix of silliness and genuinely touching moments. The story remains simple, but it lands emotionally without ever feeling heavy.

The illustrations add to the charm and humor, making it an engaging read. There’s also a bit of history about the Crown Jewels woven in, which was a nice bonus. And spotting an Indian jewel mentioned? Let’s just say I had a small hmmm 😏 moment.

Overall, this is a short, sweet read with humor, heart, and an unexpected emotional punch. I read this with my sister, and we had so much fun discussing it afterward—which made the experience even more special.

So… tell me—would you trust your granny if she said she was a jewel thief?😉
